Quick answer
Perplexity shows numbered citations on every answer. Google AI Overviews link supporting pages. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and DeepSeek can show sources when web search is used, and may show none otherwise. Whether sources appear changes with the query and settings, so check each platform directly.
| Platform | Sources visible? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | When web search is used | Answers from training knowledge alone carry no links |
| Gemini | When grounded in Google Search | Personal context and location can change results |
| Claude | When web search is enabled | Otherwise answers come from training knowledge |
| Perplexity | Every answer | Numbered citations and a visible source list |
| Copilot | For public web answers | Grounded in Bing results with linked citations |
| DeepSeek | When search is switched on | With search off, answers are from training knowledge |
| Google AI Overviews | Linked supporting pages | Appears for some queries only |

Documented facts behind the table
The table above summarises how each platform exposes sources. Part of it rests on what the providers themselves document. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode show links to supporting pages and that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be included. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results. Anthropic says Claude-SearchBot improves the quality of search results for users.
How often do sources appear?
For ChatGPT, Similarweb reports that the presence of citations in US prompts rose from about 1.6% in June 2025 to roughly 6.8% by May 2026, with wide variation by category. The figure is specific to ChatGPT in the United States and to Similarweb's measure of citation presence. It should not be read as a rate for other platforms.
1.6% to 6.8%
presence of citations in US ChatGPT prompts, June 2025 to May 2026
about 23%
of prompts in Travel and Hospitality showed citations
under 4%
of prompts in Professional Services showed citations
Similarweb's measure is the presence of citations in US ChatGPT prompts, so it says how often a source link appears at all, not which brands are named. The spread between categories is the useful part: whether an answer shows sources depends heavily on the kind of question being asked.
What visible sources let you do
| If the platform | You can | You cannot |
|---|---|---|
| Shows sources on every answer | Count cited domains, find recurring ones, check whether they mention you | Assume the same domains appear on other platforms |
| Shows sources when search runs | Analyse only the runs where sources appeared | Treat runs without sources as if they had none to show |
| Shows no sources in a mode | Analyse mentions and descriptions | Do any citation analysis for that mode |
Recording the condition, every time
Because source visibility depends on the mode, each observation should record whether search was on and whether sources were shown. Citation rates should use only the runs where sources could have appeared as the denominator. Mixing runs with and without search in one citation rate produces a number that describes neither.
Behaviour changes without notice
Why do sources matter for brands?
Cited pages decide which brands are visible. Seeing them turns a visibility number into specific work.
Why does the citation denominator matter?
Because a run that showed no sources could not have cited you. Counting it as a miss would understate your citation rate.
Can a platform with no visible sources still name my brand?
Yes. It can name you from training knowledge or from retrieval it does not display. You can still measure mentions and descriptions, but not which sources drove them.
