Quick answer
India is one of the largest markets for AI assistants, with 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, 5.8 percent of Claude.ai use and a top three place for Gemini and AI Mode. Usage skews toward students and software work. Published data is uneven, and Copilot and DeepSeek have no reliable public India figure.
01
Where AI is used most
Three published data points frame the picture: 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, India as Anthropic's second largest market for Claude.ai, and a top three ranking for both Gemini and AI Mode.
02
Who is using it, and for what
OpenAI says India has the largest number of student users of ChatGPT worldwide. Anthropic's sample shows Indian Claude.ai use is unusually software focused, at 45.2 percent, and more work oriented than the global average.
03
Where in India
Anthropic reports that four states, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Delhi, account for over half of India's Claude.ai use. No other platform has published a state level breakdown.
04
In which languages
Google has highlighted Hindi and other Indic languages in AI Mode, Search Live and a live translation model covering ten Indic languages. Anthropic has said it plans to improve Hindi and add more Indian languages.
05
Bundles and free plans
Distribution deals can move numbers quickly. Airtel offered about 360 million customers a free year of Perplexity Pro, and Perplexity's Indian monthly users peaked near 22 million before falling to about 14 million. OpenAI offered its ChatGPT Go plan free for a year to Indian users.
06
What has not been published
There is no reliable public India figure for Copilot or DeepSeek, and Gemini and Google AI Overviews have not published India specific user counts. This site does not estimate figures that do not exist.

What Indian brands should do
- 1
Track prompts in the languages your customers use, not only English.
- 2
Measure the platforms your buyers use, starting with Gemini, Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- 3
Treat software and professional queries as a priority if you sell to developers.
- 4
Check whether distribution deals inflated any usage figure you rely on.
- 5
Verify every change with the same prompts, and report sample sizes.
