Quick answer
Anthropic's sample of Claude.ai conversations found India accounts for 5.8 percent of use, second to the US, with 45.2 percent software related, the highest of any country. Work makes up 51.3 percent of Indian use against 46 percent globally.
Anthropic published a country brief for India based on about one million Claude.ai conversations sampled between 13 and 20 November 2025. It is one of the few detailed public looks at how an assistant is used in India.

Key findings
- India accounts for 5.8% of all Claude.ai use, second only to the United States.
- 45.2% of Indian use maps to software related tasks, the highest of any country.
- India ranks 101st of 116 countries on per person use, so total use is large while per capita use is low.
- Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Delhi account for over half of Indian use.
Why it matters for brands
For companies selling to Indian professionals and developers, Claude answers are likely to be part of the research process. The heavy software focus suggests that documentation, integrations and technical comparisons deserve particular attention.
Limits
Reading the headline numbers together
Two of the findings look contradictory until you read them together. India accounts for 5.8% of all Claude.ai use, second only to the United States, yet it ranks 101st of 116 countries on per-person use. Both are true. A very large population produces a large total even when the average person uses the product relatively little. The total tells you the market matters. The per-person rank tells you adoption is still early and concentrated in particular groups.
What the concentration tells you
Anthropic reports that Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Delhi account for over half of Indian use. Combined with the finding that 45.2% of Indian use maps to software-related tasks, the highest of any country, the picture is of a user base weighted toward technology hubs and technical work. That is an inference from the brief's numbers, not something the brief states about any brand's customers.
What the purpose split suggests
| Purpose | India | World |
|---|---|---|
| Work | 51.3% | 46.0% |
| Coursework | 20.9% | 19.3% |
| Personal | 27.8% | 34.7% |
Indian use skews more toward work and less toward personal use than the global mix. For a brand, the implication is about the type of question. Work-related questions are often about tools, vendors, technical trade-offs and procurement, and those are the questions where a brand's documentation and comparison pages can matter.
Applying it without over-reading it
- 1If you sell software or services to Indian professionals, add technical and procurement-style prompts to your tracking set.
- 2Check that your documentation, integration pages and comparisons are clear, current and crawlable.
- 3Test the same prompts on Claude and other assistants and compare, instead of assuming Claude's pattern applies elsewhere.
- 4Do not treat this brief as a description of your customers. Confirm with your own analytics and research.
Limits of this source
Does this mean Indian users prefer Claude?
No. The brief measures how Claude.ai is used, not how it compares with other assistants. Traffic-share data for other platforms is on the traffic-share research page.
Is a single week of data enough?
It is enough to describe patterns in that week. It is not enough to describe trends, which is why we label the sample period wherever the figures appear.
