Keep in mind
Anthropic's three bots and what each does
Anthropic documents three separate agents. ClaudeBot collects web content that may contribute to training. Claude-User supports Claude users: when a person asks a question, it may access websites. Claude-SearchBot navigates the web to improve the quality of search results for users. Anthropic explains the effect of restricting each. Restricting ClaudeBot signals that a site's future materials should be excluded from training datasets. Disabling Claude-User prevents retrieval of your content in response to a user query and may reduce visibility for user-directed web search. Disabling Claude-SearchBot prevents indexing your content for search optimisation and may reduce visibility in search results.
| Agent | Purpose | Effect of restricting it |
|---|---|---|
| ClaudeBot | Collects content that may contribute to model training | Excludes future materials from training datasets |
| Claude-User | Fetches a page when a person's question needs it | May reduce visibility for user-directed web search |
| Claude-SearchBot | Improves the quality of search results | May reduce visibility and accuracy in search results |
As with other providers, decide the training question and the search question separately, and confirm the current names and behaviour in Anthropic's help documentation before editing your robots.txt.
Where Claude sits in the market
Similarweb's August 2026 estimate puts Claude at 9.3% of tracked generative AI website traffic, up from 1.9% a year earlier. Website traffic is a partial measure, but it shows a platform that is growing quickly from a small base, which is a good reason to include it in a tracking set now.

What kinds of questions reach Claude
If your buyers are technical, documentation, comparisons and trade-off explanations can matter more than broad marketing pages. Anthropic's Economic Index brief for India, cited on our India page, reports that Indian use of Claude.ai is unusually focused on software work. That does not tell you what your own customers ask, but it suggests that clear technical documentation deserves attention for audiences in India.
Content that suits advice-style prompts
- Documentation that is current, structured and easy to navigate.
- Honest trade-off pages: when your product is a good fit, and when it is not.
- Comparisons against common alternatives, with dated facts and named sources.
- Short, quotable statements of positioning near the top of key pages.
How to measure
Write advice-style prompts, such as which tool to choose for a stated technical need, and run them on Claude with and without web access where the product offers both. Record the conditions each time, because answers with and without live retrieval are effectively different experiences and should not be blended into one rate.
Does Claude cite sources?
When web search is enabled it can. Otherwise answers come from training knowledge.
Does Claude cite sources?
It can, when it uses web search, and behaviour varies by product and mode. Record whether sources were shown for each run so citation analysis only uses runs where they could appear.
Should I allow ClaudeBot?
That decision concerns training use of your content and is separate from search visibility. Anthropic's documentation explains what each agent does; decide each on its merits.
