Citations decide visibility: reading the sources behind an AI answer

Quick answer

When an AI platform shows sources, the cited pages largely decide which brands appear. Group sources into yours, competitor owned and shared, find domains that recur but never mention you, and treat those source gaps as specific work to do.

Some AI platforms show the pages behind an answer. That is a gift for anyone trying to understand visibility, because it turns a black box into a checklist.

Three groups of sources

  • Yours: pages on your own site that are cited.
  • Competitor owned: pages that support a rival and never mention you.
  • Shared or neutral: independent sites cited for several brands.

What to look for

  1. 1Which domains recur across many answers in your category.
  2. 2Which of them you appear on, and which you do not.
  3. 3Which of your pages are cited, and what they say that others do not.

A domain that is cited again and again but never covers you is a specific, checkable source gap. It may point to a review to earn, a comparison page to clarify or documentation to improve.

A caution

Not every platform exposes sources, and cited pages change. Treat citations as evidence of a pattern across many answers, not a fixed list.

Why the cited page matters as much as the brand

When an assistant searches the web before answering, it writes from the pages it retrieves. That makes the retrieved pages the raw material of the answer. A brand that is described clearly on several retrievable pages has more to draw from than one that is described only on its own homepage. In practice this is why independent reviews, documentation and comparison pages often shape how a brand is presented, even though the brand does not own them.

It also explains why two brands with similar products can be treated very differently. The difference is often not the product but the surrounding evidence: who has written about it, how consistently, and whether that writing can be found.

How often do answers show sources at all?

Whether an answer shows any source depends on the platform, the mode and the question. Similarweb, which analyses ChatGPT prompts in the United States, reports that the presence of citations rose from about 1.6% of prompts in June 2025 to roughly 6.8% by May 2026, and that it varies widely by category.

1.6% to 6.8%

presence of citations in US ChatGPT prompts, June 2025 to May 2026

about 23%

of prompts in Travel and Hospitality showed citations

under 4%

of prompts in Professional Services showed citations

Similarweb's measure is the presence of citations in US ChatGPT prompts, so it says how often a source link appears at all, not which brands are named. The spread between categories is the useful part: whether an answer shows sources depends heavily on the kind of question being asked.

The lesson is not that citations are rare or common. It is that the answer depends on what is being asked. For some categories, source links appear often enough that being one of the cited pages is a realistic goal. For others they are uncommon, and the brand name inside the answer text matters more.

Platforms make sources visible in different ways

How the three main search-connected surfaces expose sources
SurfaceWhat you can observeWhat it means for you
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeLinks to supporting pages beside the summaryYour page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be linked
ChatGPT with searchLinked citations next to the answer when search runsAllow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search results
PerplexityNumbered citations and a visible source list on each answerAllow PerplexityBot, which is used to surface and link sites in Perplexity

Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, and that no extra markup is needed. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot as designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results. All three are covered in the sources below.

A method for reading the sources behind your category

  1. 1Run your discovery and comparison prompts on each platform that shows sources and save every cited URL.
  2. 2Group the domains: your own, competitor-owned, independent review or comparison sites, documentation, news and communities.
  3. 3Count how many answers each domain appears in. Domains that recur are the ones shaping the category.
  4. 4For each recurring domain, check whether it mentions you, describes you accurately and reflects your current facts.
  5. 5Turn each gap into a task: earn a mention, correct a description, publish a comparison, or improve documentation.

A caution about pattern versus list

Cited pages change from run to run. Treat the sources you collect as evidence of a pattern across many answers, not as a fixed list of pages to target.
Should I try to get listed on every review site?

No. Prioritise the domains that recur across many answers for your category and that currently do not mention you. A short list of the right sources is more useful than a long list of every directory.

What if an assistant does not show sources?

Then citation analysis is not possible for that surface, and you rely on mention and description analysis instead. Not every platform exposes sources in every mode.

Do my own pages ever get cited?

Yes, often for documentation, pricing and specification questions, where the brand itself is the best source. Make those pages clear, current and easy to retrieve.
