Google links AI Overviews into AI Mode: what the January 2026 update means for measurement

8 October 2026 2 min read

Headline findings

  • Google made Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews globally on 27 January 2026.
  • A new "Show more" handoff lets a reader move from an AI Overview straight into an AI Mode conversation, rolling out globally on mobile.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode remain distinct surfaces for measurement purposes: a brand can be cited in one and omitted from the other.

Quick answer

On 27 January 2026, Google made Gemini 3 the default model behind AI Overviews worldwide and added a handoff that lets someone reading an AI Overview continue straight into an AI Mode conversation. The two surfaces are now more connected in the product experience, but they remain separate measurement surfaces: an AI Overview is a short summary on a results page, while AI Mode is a full conversational session, and a brand can appear in one without appearing in the other.

What Google announced

Robby Stein, Google's VP of Product for Search, announced two changes on 27 January 2026. First, Gemini 3 became the default model powering AI Overviews worldwide, replacing the earlier model generation. Second, Google added a handoff: tapping "Show more" to finish reading an AI Overview now takes the reader into AI Mode's conversational interface instead of simply expanding the summary in place. Multiple outlets covering the announcement, including TechCrunch, 9to5Google and TechRadar, described the same two changes on the same date.

AI Mode itself had already moved to Gemini 3's Flash and Pro variants at the end of 2025, according to 9to5Google's reporting, so the January update brought AI Overviews onto the same model family AI Mode was already using.

Why this still does not merge the two surfaces for measurement

A tighter handoff between the two experiences does not make them the same thing to track. An AI Overview is a short, auto-generated summary shown directly on the search results page, answered without the user asking a follow-up question. AI Mode is a multi-turn conversation, closer in shape to a chat session, that someone enters either directly or now via that handoff. A brand's answer in a short-form Overview and a brand's answer three turns into an AI Mode conversation come from different prompts, different context windows and, often, different source pages.

One surface showing you and not the other is a real, measurable gap

Because the handoff is one-directional (Overview into Mode, not the reverse) and the two answers are generated separately, a brand appearing in an AI Overview is not guaranteed to appear if the reader continues into AI Mode, and the reverse is equally possible.

What this means in practice

  • Keep tracking AI Overviews and AI Mode as two separate rows in any report, not a combined Google figure.
  • A prompt that already performs well in AI Overviews is worth checking in AI Mode too now that the path between them is shorter for users.
  • Expect some volatility in AI Overview answers immediately after a default model change, since the underlying model generating them changed on Google's schedule, not yours.
