Seven questions to ask before you buy an AI visibility tool

Quick answer

Before buying an AI visibility tool, ask which platforms it covers, whether you can track your own prompts, how it defines its numbers, whether it shows sources, whether it helps you act and verify, how it fits your workflow and how clear the pricing is.

Key takeaways

  • Match platform coverage to where your customers ask.
  • Insist on custom prompts and defined, traceable numbers.
  • Value sources, action and verification over a single score.
  1. 1Which platforms does it cover, and do they match where your buyers ask?
  2. 2Can you track your own prompts, not only a generic index?
  3. 3How are the numbers defined, and can you see the sample size and the answers behind them?
  4. 4Does it show which sources AI relies on?
  5. 5Does it help you act, and can you verify the result afterwards?
  6. 6Does it fit your workflow: multiple brands, exports, integrations and security needs?
  7. 7Is pricing published or clearly scoped, so you can compare cost?

How do the main tools compare?

We compared seven vendors using only what each publishes on its own pages, and marked anything not documented as such. See the comparison hub for the full feature by feature detail, including where each tool is ahead of BrandWater AI.

What a good answer looks like for each question

Questions, good answers and warning signs
QuestionA good answerA warning sign
Which platforms does it cover?A clear list, with a statement of how each is observedVague claims of covering all major AI
Can I track my own prompts?Yes, grouped by topic and intent, with locations and languagesOnly a fixed generic index
How are numbers defined?Written definitions, denominators and sample sizes on screenA single score with no method
Does it show sources?Every source link preserved and grouped by ownerSources hidden or summarised away
Does it help me act and verify?Evidence-linked recommendations and a rerun to checkDashboards only, with no path to action
Does it fit my workflow?Multiple brands, roles, exports and clear data handlingSingle brand, no export, unclear security
Is pricing clear?Published or clearly scoped, with limits statedPricing that changes with every call

Run a two week pilot before you commit

  1. 1Give every vendor the same brief: the same brand, the same twenty prompts and the same platforms.
  2. 2Ask each to show you the raw answers behind three numbers of your choice.
  3. 3Repeat the run after a few days and compare how stable the results are.
  4. 4Check that a number you can verify by hand matches what the tool reports.
  5. 5Ask what happens to your data when you leave, and how it can be exported.

Ask about the boundaries as well as the strengths

Every tool has boundaries. Some observe more platforms, some go deeper on a few. Some are strong on reporting, others on recommendations. A vendor that tells you plainly where it is not the best fit is usually one that understands its own product. Be cautious of anyone who claims to do everything, and of any comparison that mentions no weakness.

Questions about data and security

  • Where is customer data stored, and who can access it?
  • Is each brand's data kept separate from every other brand's?
  • What certifications does the vendor hold today, and what is only planned? A planned certification is not a held one.
  • Can you delete your data, and how quickly?
  • Does the vendor claim access to anything it could not really have, such as a model's private data? If so, treat the rest of its claims with care.

Compare using the vendors' own words

Our comparison hub uses only what each vendor publishes on its own pages, marks anything not documented, and includes where other tools are ahead of BrandWater AI.

How to weigh the answers

Not every question carries equal weight for every team. A single-brand company may care most about measurement quality and price, while an agency will care about workspaces, roles and exports. Score each question from zero to two for each vendor, then weight the questions by importance to you before adding them up. The weighting is where your own priorities enter the decision.

Treat undocumented answers as questions, not as failures. A vendor that has not published a feature may still offer it, and one that publishes everything may still deliver less than it describes. The pilot exists to settle exactly these uncertainties with evidence from your own brand.

Which is the best AI visibility tool?

It depends on your needs. Enterprises may prioritise security and integrations, small teams price and simplicity, and agencies multi brand workspaces. Use the criteria above.

How much should I budget?

Pricing models vary, and many are scoped by brands, prompts and platforms. Ask each vendor for a written quote against the same brief so the numbers can be compared directly.

Do I need an all-in-one platform?

Not necessarily. Some teams combine a measurement tool with their existing SEO and analytics stack. What matters is that the measurement is defined, traceable and connected to action.
