Quick answer
AI visibility is the observable presence and positioning of a brand in AI generated answers, recommendations, comparisons and cited sources for relevant prompts. It is measured as mention, recommendation and citation rates from a sample of answers, not as a ranking or a single score.
AI visibility is the observable presence and positioning of a brand in AI generated answers, recommendations, comparisons and cited sources, for the prompts that matter to your customers.
The building blocks
- Prompt: the question or instruction a person gives an AI system.
- Observation: one stored answer to one prompt on one platform at one time.
- Mention: your brand is named in the answer.
- Recommendation: the answer actively suggests your brand.
- Citation: the answer shows a link to one of your pages as a source.
- Share of voice: your mentions relative to all tracked brands in the same answers.
What it is not
- It is not a ranking. AI answers do not have a fixed order.
- It is not access to a model's internals. It is measured from the answers anyone could see.
- It is not a single score. It is a set of rates with their sample sizes.
You are ready to move on when you can explain
0 of 3Why the definition matters
AI visibility is a young field and the term is used loosely. Some people mean how often a brand appears in a chatbot answer. Others mean a score from a vendor, a rank in a list, or traffic that comes from an assistant. These are different things, and mixing them produces reports nobody can check. A precise definition gives a team something it can measure the same way every month.
The definition used here has three parts. It is observable, meaning it comes from the answers anyone could see. It is positional, meaning it covers whether a brand is named and how it is described, not just whether it is named. And it is sampled, meaning it rests on repeated runs of a defined set of prompts, with the sample size stated.
How AI visibility differs from search visibility
| Search visibility | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of result | A ranked list of links | A written answer that may name several brands |
| Stability | Broadly stable for a query | Varies between runs, models, locations and accounts |
| Typical measures | Position, impressions, clicks | Mention, recommendation and citation rates, share of voice |
| What you can influence | Your own pages and links | Your pages, and the independent sources answers rely on |
| How to read a change | Compare positions over time | Compare rates over time on identical prompts, with sample sizes |
Why it is worth measuring now
Independent research shows AI answers changing behaviour rather than replacing search. Pew Research Center found that on Google results pages showing an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% on pages without one. Google's chief executive said in July 2025 that AI Overviews had two billion monthly users. These are different measures from different sources, and they point the same way: a growing share of discovery happens inside an answer.
8%
of visits included a click on a traditional result when an AI summary appeared
15%
of visits included one when no AI summary appeared
1%
of visits with an AI summary clicked a link inside the summary
These figures come from Pew Research Center's analysis of the browsing data of 900 U.S. adults during March 2025. They describe Google searches in one country and one month, and they measure clicks, not influence. A person who reads a brand name in an AI summary and searches for it later will not appear in these numbers at all.
A worked example of the vocabulary
Imagine a fixed set of forty prompts, each run on three platforms, giving 120 completed answers. If a brand is named in 30 of them, its mention rate is 25% of eligible answers, and the report should say 30 of 120. If 12 of those 30 answers actively recommend the brand, the recommendation rate is 10% of eligible answers. If 9 of the answers show a link to one of its own pages, the citation rate is 7.5%. The numbers in this paragraph illustrate the arithmetic and are not results for any real brand.
Where to go next
- 1Read how to build a prompt set, because every measure depends on it.
- 2Run a first audit to get a baseline.
- 3Learn how to read an omission and a source gap, the two findings that lead most directly to action.
Is AI visibility the same as a ranking?
No. AI answers have no fixed order, and the same question can name different brands from one run to the next. AI visibility is reported as rates over a sample, not as a position in a list.
Do I need to be a large brand to appear?
No, but a brand with a small public footprint has less for systems to draw on. Clear pages, consistent facts and accurate independent descriptions matter more than size.
