Quick answer
To improve how ChatGPT describes your brand, state your facts clearly on your own site, earn accurate coverage on independent sites, keep details consistent everywhere, let search crawlers reach your pages, then measure mention and citation rates on a fixed prompt set.
Key takeaways
- To improve how ChatGPT describes your brand, state your facts clearly on your own site, earn accurate coverage on independent sites, keep details consistent everywhere, let search crawlers reach your pages, then measure mention and citation rates on a fixed prompt set.
- Measure before and after with the same prompts.
- There is no way to guarantee a mention, so aim for clear facts and credible sources.
What influences whether ChatGPT names a brand?
- How clearly your site says what you do, who it is for and how you differ
- Independent coverage and reviews that a search step can retrieve
- Consistent names, plans and prices across sources
- The wording, language and location of the person asking
A step by step playbook
- 1Write a plain language summary of what you do on your homepage and product pages.
- 2Add pages that answer the comparison and how-to questions buyers ask.
- 3Check that your robots.txt is deliberate: OpenAI documents separate crawlers for search and for training, so decide what you allow.
- 4Earn accurate mentions on independent sites relevant to your category.
- 5Correct outdated pages and directories.
- 6Track a fixed prompt set on ChatGPT monthly and compare mention and citation rates.
Prompts to test
- What are the best tools for [your category] for a small team?
- Compare [your brand] and [competitor] for [use case]
- Is [your brand] good for [need]?
Keep in mind
Understand the two ways ChatGPT gets brand information
ChatGPT can answer from what the model learned in training, and it can search the web and cite what it finds. Your levers are different for each. For the first, the lever is a consistent, credible public footprint over time. For the second, the lever is being retrievable and being the clearest answer when a search runs.
The crawlers, exactly as OpenAI documents them
| User agent | Documented purpose | robots.txt note |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features | Sites that disallow it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Changes take about 24 hours to process. |
| GPTBot | Used to crawl content that may be used in training generative AI foundation models | Disallowing it indicates content should not be used in training |
| ChatGPT-User | Used for certain user actions in ChatGPT and Custom GPTs | Because actions are user-initiated, robots.txt rules may not apply |
OpenAI also states that each setting is independent. A site can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot. Decide the two on their own merits.
How often ChatGPT shows sources
Whether ChatGPT shows sources depends on the question. Similarweb's analysis of US ChatGPT prompts found that the presence of citations rose from about 1.6% in June 2025 to roughly 6.8% by May 2026, and that it ranged from around 23% in Travel and Hospitality to under 4% in Professional Services. The consequence for your plan: in some categories being a cited page is a realistic goal, and in others the brand name inside the answer text matters more.
1.6% to 6.8%
presence of citations in US ChatGPT prompts, June 2025 to May 2026
about 23%
of prompts in Travel and Hospitality showed citations
under 4%
of prompts in Professional Services showed citations
Similarweb's measure is the presence of citations in US ChatGPT prompts, so it says how often a source link appears at all, not which brands are named. The spread between categories is the useful part: whether an answer shows sources depends heavily on the kind of question being asked.

A monthly routine
- 1Run your fixed prompt set on ChatGPT with search on, and separately with it off, recording the conditions.
- 2Record mention rate, description and any cited pages for each prompt.
- 3For prompts where you are absent, read the cited sources and check whether they describe you.
- 4Fix the most common gap and rerun the affected prompts after a few days.
Does ChatGPT always cite sources?
No. Citations appear when web search is used. Answers from training knowledge alone carry no links.
Should I block GPTBot?
That is a decision about training use of your content, and it is separate from appearing in ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot does not by itself remove you from search features, but check OpenAI's current documentation before changing your robots.txt.
Why does ChatGPT give me a different answer each time?
Answers are sampled and can change with model version, location and whether search is used. That is why a fixed prompt set with repeat runs is more reliable than a single check.
